The Palestinian Authority (PA) issued a ban on demonstrations during the upcoming holiday of Eid Al Fitr, WAFA news agency reported.

Issuing protest-permits will cease in order to “ensure that the flow of ordinary day-to-day life is not disrupted during Eid,” adviser to the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas stated on Wednesday.

This comes in response to a public call made by a group of activists, journalists and artists for the continuation of protests in Ramallah and Nablus in a march that was set to be on Wednesday evening.

Ongoing demonstrations during the past month in the West Bank have demanded the lifting of economic restrictions imposed on the Gaza Strip by the PA.

In an official announcement published by WAFA, a PA official explained that “while freedom of expression is highly respected, these rallies and protests directly affect citizens and prevent them from pursuing their daily tasks.”

Since late March, Palestinians have participated in various peaceful demonstrations and, according to WAFA, will be able to continue doing so once Eid comes to an end.
