Chilean President Sebastián Piñera said on Thursday that he supports the establishment of an Independent Palestinian State.

Piñera’s comments came after a meeting with his Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, in the Latin American country.

He also stressed that Palestinian people have the right to self-determination.

Piñera is the first Chilean president to visit Ramallah in the West Bank. He was elected President in March 2018.

Chile has been a supporter of Palestine’s request to join UNESCO as non-member in 2011. It was also the first country to send a diplomatic representative to the Palestinian Authority in 1998, and to recognize the Palestinian State in 2011.

Abbas’s meeting with Piñera comes just days before the US moves its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

On Monday, Abbas asked Latin American countries not to move their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, however, Guatemala and Paraguay announced that they would be following in the steps of the US.
