King Abdullah II has asserted that enabling the work of UNRWA is a shared responsibility among Arab nations and the international community held a duty to provide support to refugees until a “just solution is reached”.

“Any obstruction of the vital services of UNRWA will negatively impact over 5 million Palestinian refugees in the region,” the king remarked during his opening speech at the 29th Arab League Summit in Dhahran on Sunday.

He called for the Arab group to “step up diplomatic efforts with all regional and international organisations to take on the mounting challenges facing the Arab world ” through devising an action plan for cooperation.

He expressed Jordan’s pride in carrying out the historical duty of custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and asserted that Jordan, in cooperation with at the Palestinian National Authority and the support of Arab states, would “counter any attempts to change the identity of the holy city, impose new facts on the ground, or change the historical and legal status quo”.

The king reiterated Jordan’s stance on the Syrian crisis, similar to Minister of State for Media Affairs, Mohamad Al Momani yesterday, pushing for a political solution, in accordance to the Geneva track. He also asserted that “good neighbourly relations” dictate that “any attempts to intervene in the internal affairs of Arab states” must be countered.

He also stressed on the importance of “an inclusive political process” in Iraq, after commending the country for their defeat of ISIS.

The annual gathering of the 22-member Arab League is attended by all the member countries, except Syria, where King Abdullah II headed the Jordanian delegation and made opening remarks welcoming the host in his capacity of the host of the previous summit in 2017.
