A doctor at Prince Hamza Hospital in Amman was assaulted by a man in his twenties on Saturday, whose sister died at the hospital shortly before the doctor was attacked, according to a security source.

The same source added that two pieces of equipment were destroyed by the offender in the emergency room as well.
The man was taken into police custody shortly after the assault.

Medical staff in Jordan have been under a rising threat of being attacked while on duty in recent years.

Hisham Fityani, a member of the Jordan Medical Association and the individual in charge of dealing with assaults on doctors, said that more than 73 assaults on healthcare workers took place in 2017.

Last September, Al Karak Hospital was shut down after a nurse was violently attacked by a patient’s accompaniers. The nurse was hospitalized and later on arrested, which urged the Jordanian Nursing Council to ask Al Karak Hospital staff to go on strike immediately until the nurse has been set free.

Mohammed Hatamleh, President of the Nursing Council, said at the time that the government was negligent of incidents related to the safety of medical staff in Jordan.
