A student enrolled in Yarmouk University, Irbid attempted to commit suicide by trying to jump from the Hijjawi (engineering) faculty building on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the university, guards and students had stopped the girl from jumping.

The university spokeswoman, Dr. Naheda Makhadmeh, commented on the incident by saying the student’s attempt came after she received a two-semester expulsion for cheating.

A panel of professors had issued the expulsion of the Counseling and Educational Psychology student, as a penalty for impersonation. The spokeswoman clarified that the girl had asked one of her friends to take an English 101 online exam instead of her.

Even though Makhadmeh glossed over the incident by claiming the girl was trying to attract attention and pity, it is noteworthy that suicide rates have been on the rise globally and nationally.
