Disposing of expired substances is always a challenge, even more so when medicaments are considered. Ashjan Al Naouri has found a creative and informative way to repurpose medication by displaying it.

With more than a million medicaments traded on the Jordanian market, some are bound to end up unused in people’s homes. Whether it is pills, liquids or ointments. Keeping them can endanger children and adults alike.

As a pharmacist, Naouri deals with people and drugs on a daily basis. Answering customers’ questions about medicine is at the core of her job.

“People often come and ask me about drugs then have lying around the house. That could be dangerous and potentially fatal. In some cases the medicine is expired and I take it from them in order to dispose of it using the proper channels”, Naouri said.

Naouri embarked on a creative mission to make works of art by using drugs as her building blocks. She used the collected drugs and made artworks by gluing them to glass. She places a second layer on top in order to prevent the pills accidentally falling off.

She knew she could do more to raise awareness and asked customers to supply her with their expired drugs. She made information boards where she drew different organs and systems of the body and glued the medication used to cure ailments.

Naouri’s innovative approach serves a social function. She encourages recycling and educates people in the process by putting environmental preservation and public safety at the forefront.
