Israeli Authorities released on Sunday Turkish academic Cemil Tekli, 28 days after arresting him at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, his lawyer Lea Tsmel informed the Daily Sabah Turkish newspaper.

Tekli was arrested on his way back to Turkey after participating in an event in Jerusalem on January 15.

The reason of detention remained unclear as the Israeli authorities refused to give the reasons behind it. Israel also refused the Turkish news Agency Anadolu’s request to follow Tekli’s trial.

Tekli’s wife Maryam Tekli told Anadolu that "[her] husband was unlawfully arrested, we are in shock. We only went to Jerusalem for travel reasons. My husband is innocent… Israeli authorities are not giving us any information."

Tekli’s detention was extended several times before he was finally released.
