Egypt’s National Security Agency has ordered the detention of Russian belly dancer Ekaterina Andreeva, also known in Egypt with the stage name “Gawhara”(meaning jewel in Arabic), after she was accused of being a “threat to Egyptian national security”.

After posting a dancing video on the 3rd of February that went viral, the dancer was investigated by the Giza Prosecution Office and charged with “inciting debauchery” and “arousing sexual instincts” three days later.Andreeva was released on bail amounting to 5,000 EGP ($283) and awaits prosecution.

Egyptian media reported that the reason behind the detention was Andreeva’s lack of commitment to the dress code of belly dancers in Egypt.

The dancer disputed the accusation of being “semi-naked” and claimed her dress was “identical to the costume [her] counterparts wear in Egypt.”

Andreeva’s lawyer, Mohammad Saleh, defended her in a televised interview on the Dream channel saying that she is the only foreign belly dancer in Egypt who has the right to work as others only have tourist visas.

Saleh added that Andreeva was “committed to wearing the [outfit] deemed appropriate by the ministry of tourism.”
