The Greater Amman Municipality signed three memorandums of understanding (MOU) with the Turkish MAPA Construction and Trade Company for the feasibility study of three new transportation projects in Amman.

The signing ceremony was attended by Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh, MAPA’s Chairman, Mehmet Nazif Gunal, and the Jordanian Minister of Investment Affairs and JIC Chairman, Muhannad Shehadeh.

Shawarbeh confirmed that such projects are part of a long-term strategic planning for Amman to help in keeping up with the increased population growth in the capital city.

He stressed that they will help Amman’s quantum leap in transport and traffic projects in the city.

The signed MOUs will not oblige the Kingdom with any financial commitments, they included three main projects, the first one is a tunnel that connects northern Amman with its south. Its length is estimated to be between 800-1200 meters, which will help in decreasing the traffic.

Another project is the Light Rail Transit (LRT), that will connect Sweileh to the Queen Alia International Airport, which will help in linking northern cities with the main airport in Amman.

The third project will include the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), that will connect Sweileh, to the Jordanian National Gallery for Fine Arts in Ras Al Ein, and it intersects with Amman Development Corridor and the Queen Alia International Airport.

Additionally, Shawarbeh confirmed with Shehadeh that the Turkish investments in the Kingdom are estimated to reach $2.5 billion, calling other Turkish enterprises to invest in Jordan and benefit from the advantages of our country.

Jordan’s strategic location will help in reconstructing neighbour countries that were destroyed in wars.

However, the Jordanian government is working currently on the Bus Rapid Transit project. It is a $160 million under-construction transportation system in Amman, Jordan.

The city's first bus rapid transit system, will provide a premium quality, economic, car-competitive mass transit system that will attract the entire spectrum of Amman citizens.

It has been in the works since 2009 and the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) had promised that it would be operational by 2019.
