On May 5, 2018, 200 Jordanian men are set to take part in a mass wedding organized by the Greater Al-Ramtha Municipality.

The Mayor of Al-Ramtha, Hassan Abu Al Sheih, announced the news on Saturday, according to the Facebook page “Ramtha.”

Another mass wedding is currently being organized by a charity in Irbid, where all wedding costs will be covered for five couples.

This may come as a surprise to some, but mass weddings aren’t a new phenomenon in Jordan.

Mass weddings do not fall under the category of Jordanian traditions, but the nonprofit organization Al-Afaf Association has been organizing them since 1995.

The charity adopted the idea to help financially-disadvantaged couples tie the knot.

Weddings are a costly affair for a large majority of the male population, seeing as in Jordan, the man traditionally pays for the wedding.

By 2014, Al-Afaf Associations had helped 1452 men and women say “I do.”

The association not only paid for all those weddings’ costs, but it provided all the newlyweds with essential gifts to help them set up their new marital homes.
