Mohammad al-Momani, Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs, on Tuesday said the results of the Monday's voting at the United Nations Security Council prove the international community stands against the recent US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

This follows the United States' vetoe of the UN Security Council draft resolution to dismiss Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Monday.

“Despite the US veto, international law affirms that the US’ decision is illegal, and does not recognize this decision or any of its consequences,” al-Momani was quoted as saying by the Petra News Agency.

Al-Momani said his country will work with all Arab countries and the international community to mobilize support to recognize an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He said Jordan will be working with the United Nations Arab Group to create a momentum that bolsters the legal status of East Jerusalem as an occupied territory and proves the illegality of the US’ decision.

The resolution was proposed by Egypt and backed by the 14 permanent and non-permanent member states in the Security Council, who considered Trump’s decision illegal and contradicts international law.

However, the final US veto against the draft resolution raised many questions about US legitimacy to back Israel in such a decision was considered by the whole international community as illegal.
