A Jordanian civilian, who was kidnapped in southern Syria for ransom by an armed group, was released and returned home after several days, an official source at the army said Sunday.

"The Military Intelligence Directorate of the Jordan Armed Forces set Manhal Ahmad Abdullah Hamdan free from his kidnappers, who tortured him and demanded ransom for his release", added the source.

The military-linked Hala Akhbar site said Sunday that the Jordanian man had been living in southern Syria for a long time, where he ran his own farming business. It says he was tortured by his captors.

The site says the man has returned to his family in northern Jordan.

No further details have been released.
