Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met in Riyadh on Wednesday for an unplanned meeting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, official PA news agency Wafa reported.

Abbas briefed the Crown Prince on the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, alongside US efforts to move the peace process forward.

Abbas had reportedly been in Egypt, where he was scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, when he was summoned to Riyadh to meet with the Saudi rulers.

The Palestinian president said the Palestinian leadership and people stand with Saudi Arabia in the face of the various attacks against it, and thanked the Saudi kingdom for its support of the Palestinian people.

The Palestinian ambassador in Riyadh, Bassam Agha, said the meeting would address bilateral contacts and efforts to strengthen relations between the two sides, as well as “developments on the Palestinian issue.”

The meeting comes following an unprecedented wave of arrests on Saturday of dozens of Saudi’s most powerful princes, military officers, businessmen and government ministers.
