Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamadallah left Gaza on Thursday morning after a four-day visit aimed to end political division with rival Hamas party.

The visit came as a practical step for the Palestinian national reconciliation after having many talks earlier last month in Cairo with Egyptian mediation.

During the visit, Hamadallah along with many senior Fatah leaders met with Hamas officials after the Islamic movement agreed to hand over power to unity government earlier last month.

The internationally recognized Palestinian Authority had a decade-long split with the Islamic Hamas movement, internationally listed as a terrorist group, after the latter won the parliamentary elections in 2006. Shortly after this, the two parties had armed clashes that ended up with ousting pro-Fatah leaders to the West Bank, and Hamas taking over Gaza by power.

Since the split began, many regional and international countries tried to mediate between the two parties to reconcile; all of the previous attempts had failed, but this one seems to be more serious as practical steps started to be seen on the ground.
