The US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters stated that it has driven out Daesh from 80% of the city of Raqqa.

According to the BBC, The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that its three month-long assault against Daesh in Raqqa is in its "final stages".

A monitoring group stated that militants were forced to pull out of five areas due to heavy air strikes, in the past 48 hours alone.

Following Daesh's large acquisition and loss of territory, the city of Raqqa became Daesh's de facto "capital", attempting to legitimize its rule via beheadings, cruxifiction, and torture of any residents opposing the group's rule.

Approximately 15,000 SDF fighters, supported by US-led coalition air strikes as well as special forces, surrounded Raqqa before launching an offensive to recapture the city back in June.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reports that Daesh militants have withdrawan from several districts, and abandoned grain silos and mills used for food supplies.

It is estimated that the SDF has thus far retaken 90% of the city.

Meanwhile tens of thousands of civilians have fled due to escalated fighting. Estimates suggest that those remaining inside the city are between 10,000 to 25,000 civilians.
