Thousands of Indonesians gathered outside of the Burmese embassy in Jakarta, protesting what some would call 'ethnic cleansing' of Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state.

Protestors demanded Indonesia suspend all diplomatic relations with Buddhist-majority country, echoed by protests in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lampur.

Roads were blocked with barbed wire set up around the embassy, which was being patrolled by police in riot gear and armed with water cannons.

Some protesters chanted “Allahu Akbar”, while others shouted slogans such as “Slaughter Myanmar” and “Burn the embassy”, in groups which were lead by far-right Islamist parties, according to Reuters.

Buddhists should respect Muslims in Myanmar in the same way that Muslims respected Buddhists in Indonesia, one speaker told the crowd, using a loud-hailer.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, along with top security officials this week, to urge a halt to the bloodshed. Marsudi also visited Dhaka, to offer help in tackling the crisis with the influx of refugees.

“It is the responsibility of the host countries to ensure the safety of all diplomatic missions and their personnel,” the spokesperson for the Burmese embassy said. “Indonesia takes this responsibility seriously.”

The spokesperson also added that staff within the embassy will remain safe and protected.

Tensions were at their highest during the weekend, when a petrol bomb was thrown at the embassy causing a small fire.

Indonesian police have promised to bar Islamist groups from staging an upcoming rally at the Borobudur Buddhist temple in central Java, to protest against the treatment of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims.
