Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas decided to turn the future multimillion dollar Palestinian presidential palace into a national library, just as the building was nearing its completion.

Development of the palace started five years ago north of Ramallah, and it was intended to be used as a presidential palace and a guesthouse for visiting delegations, according to Palestinian news agency Ma’an.

“The president decided to let the public benefit from the palace by turning the building into a huge national library to be run by a board of trustees,” said Muhammad Shtayeh, chairman of the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction, the institution responsible for the project and building the Palestinian National Authority’s infrastructure.

Shtayeh said that the building would be one of the most significant modern architectural projects in Palestine, boasting an impressive design inspired by Islamic architecture, with work done by young Palestinian architects, according to Wafa.

The 4700-square meter palace, which reportedly cost $13 million, has an indoor swimming pool, possibly making the act of reading in a public library wetter than usual.
