A police officer was shot dead and another critically injured Saturday, when a wanted suspect fired shots at a highway patrol in the southern city of Maan, according to a security source.

Two police officers and a local civilian recruited by the public security department were reportedly inside their vehicle a 21-year-old man opened fire. Two of men suffered gunshot wounds to various parts of their bodies and were treated on the spot, but thea police sergeant was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

“One of our police officers, a sergeant, died on Saturday in hospital after a wanted person shot at him and another police officer while they were in their highway patrol vehicle in Maan marketplace,” Police Spokesperson Amer Sartawi said.

The suspect fled the area and an all-points bulletin was issued for his arrest, The Jordan Times reported.
An investigation has reportedly been launched and the shooter is being hunted by police.
