A Lebanese singer on Tuesday released a song in memory of Palestinian activist Basel Al Araj, who was killed by Israeli occupation forces on 6th March 2017 in Al Bireh, near Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.

The song by Lebanese hip hop artist Gaafar Touffar, titled "Al Araj", mixes archive footage and images of iconic figures of Palestinian resistance, with footage of Araj, in life, and during his funeral in his hometown of Al Walaja, near Bethlehem.

A well known activist against the occupation, Araj was arrested and imprisoned by Palestinian Authority (PA) forces in April 2016.

He was vocal in his criticism of the PA's "security coordination" with Israeli forces, which is seen by many as "collaboration" with the occupation of Palestine.

While in the PA prison, Araj alleged that he had been tortured by the PA and went on a hunger strike with other comrades.

After his release from the PA jail, he went into hiding, but was tracked down by Israeli forces. There have been allegations that the PA were involved in giving Israeli forces information about his location and that they were complicit in his killing.

Touffar addresses these allegations, repeating: "Instead of protecting you, they [the PA] handed you over to be executed".

Footage shows bullets and a kuffiyeh on a blood-stained floor

Araj died after a two-hour shootout in Al Bireh. He was holed up in an apartment which had been surrounded by Israeli soldiers. Photos taken shortly after his killing showed a kuffiyeh, a gun and spent rounds of ammunition on the blood-stained floor.

Among these symbols of Palestinian resistance, Araj is also reported to have died surrounded by his books, adding to the perception of him as "The Educated Martyr"; an intellectual who was willing to put his ideals into action.

Over footage of Araj's funeral, Touffar sings:

"You put Palestine in your heart. A shotgun in one hand, a book in the other,"
