In the run up to Jordanian municipality and decentralisation elections, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) has been using Facebook to respond to people’s inquiries and comments about electoral law and procedure.

The IEC is the organisation which conducts Jordanian elections at all levels of government. They have recently become very active on social media; while most responses have been serious and straight to the point, they have chosen to sprinkle some with a healthy dose of sass.

When someone left a comment claiming they would vote for “my cousins, my family members, and my tribesmen regardless of their culture and experience”, they the IEC responded with a simple “oh, they’re all running?”

Another chose to rebel; “I wouldn’t elect anyone, even if my father were running”, to which they asked: “does your father know this?”

They even used lyrics by popular Syrian singer, George Wassouf, to tear down someone who claimed they would “vote for [Wassouf] as usual”, adapting the lyrics to tell the person to “participate well, choose [the candidate] who will benefit you.”
