Israeli authorities have announced today that they will maintain five battalions on standby in the West Bank in case conflicts with Palestinians arise on Friday, according to AFP.

Tension continues in Jerusalem after the installation of metal detectors at the entrances of Al Aqsa Mosque, further antagonizing Muslim worshipers and Palestinian leaders.

Calls for a “Friday of anger” have increased as Palestinians reject the closure of Al Aqsa Mosque by Israeli authorities last Friday after a gunfight took place in one of the mosque’s courtyards in which three Palestinians and two Israeli police officers died.

Friday prayers in Al Aqsa hadn’t been banned since 1969 prior to the incident, which sparked the anger of Muslims and the condemnation of the Jordanian government.
