A security man and two civilians were wounded in three separate shootings by unknown assailants in the predominantly Shiite province of Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia, according to a spokesman for the Eastern Province Police.

The spokesman said the security man was shot as he passed his car on Sunday on an agricultural road in Qatif, adding that his condition was stable.

In the town of Awamiya in Qatif, two people were also injured when they were near their homes on Sunday afternoon in two separate shootings, the spokesman said.

Police said the three attackers were unknown and they had opened investigations into both incidents to investigate who was responsible.

Over the last few weeks, Qatif has witnessed violence and shootings, in which a number of police and civilians were killed in a civil development project in the Masoura district.

On Friday, the Saudi authorities announced the death of a policeman and the wounding six others after a patrol was attacked by a bomb in the neighbourhood, before announcing again Saturday that two other policemen were wounded in an attack on a police patrol in the Nazareth neighbourhood of Qatif.

The authorities accuse "terrorists" and drug traffickers for the attacks.
