The citizens of Egypt’s Sharqia Governorate took the law into their own hands this week, when they tied up a young woman to an electricity post after accusing her of attempting to kidnap a baby.
A video posted on YouTube showed an angry crowd of people using a thick blue rope to fasten the woman to an electricity pole.
According to a report by Egyptian newspaper Youm7, witnesses from Sharqia said that they saw the woman trying to sneak into the child’s home to kidnap her.
Brigadier General Samir Abu Rida told the paper that the offender is currently in police custody.
Abu Rida said that the woman claimed to have snuck into the child’s home to “steal a mobile phone that she saw through the window, not in an attempt to kidnap a child.”
Soon after arresting the woman, police officers arrested the 13 individuals who tied her up to the electricity post and beat her up afterwards.
