Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said Saturday that he met in Washington with Jason Greenblatt, the lead international negotiator for US President Donald Trump.

The meeting took place after Greenblatt and Jared Kushner, senior adviser to US President Donald Trump and his son-in-law, had visited the Middle East and met Palestinian and Israeli leaders.

Following the meetings, Greenblatt tweeted that the purpose was to “further our discussions on how to achieve peace,” without providing details of the talks.

According to US officials, further talks are going to be held with Palestinian and Israeli teams in Washington and in the region.

Erekat also confirmed that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is going to visit the region in August to work on reviving the peace process. According to WAFA news agency, Erekat said Guterres told him over telephone that he is committed to the two-state solution and that he intends to visit the region in August to pursue that goal.

Erekat was in New York on Thursday where he addressed the United Nations on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

“We are a people who strive to achieve our independence, and our choice in the PLO is to achieve peace peacefully through negotiations,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Erekat as saying at the forum.
