Iraqi television announced on Thursday the end of ISIS in the northern city of Mosul, ending three years of militant control of the city.

An Iraqi military commander said earlier that his forces had liberated the famous Nuri mosque and the surrounding areas.

General Sami al-Aridi warned that the site needed to be scanned by the engineering troops, fearing that the ISIS fighters might have planted explosives.

Al-Nuri mosque became a symbolic figure as from its pulpit, the leader of the terrorist organization, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, announced in July 2014 the establishment of the so-called "caliphate" on territories including areas of Syria and Iraq.
