Spain halts third 'Israeli' arms deal, totaling over €1 billion canceled
Spain has canceled its third major arms deal with 'Israel' as a new law banning 'Israeli' defense contracts officially came into effect on Wednesday, escalating sanctions over the genocide in Gaza.
The latest termination involves a Euro 207 million (USD 242 million) contract with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to supply advanced navigation and targeting pods for Spain’s Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, Haaretz reported.
Under the agreement signed last year, Rafael was set to deliver approximately 45 Lightning V pods, which are equipped with electro-optical sensors, laser designators, infrared systems, and synthetic-aperture radar for high-resolution scanning, imaging, and mapping.
This cancellation follows a string of recent terminations, including a Euro 700 million (USD 820 million) contract with Elbit Systems for PULS rockets, a Euro 237 million (USD 277 million) deal for Spike missiles from Rafael, and a Euro 6.6 million (USD 7.7 million) contract for 9mm ammunition from 'Israel' Weapon Industries.
These agreements collectively represented hundreds of millions of euros in defense cooperation.
The new Spanish law, announced earlier this month by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, imposes a comprehensive embargo on 'Israel'. It prohibits the export or import of weapons and dual-use technologies to or from 'Israel', as well as their transport through Spanish territory.
The legislation also bans the import and promotion of products from 'Israeli' settlements in the West Bank.
Exceptions to the embargo may be granted by the Spanish cabinet if enforcing it would harm Spain’s general national interests. The law also bars the transit of fuels that could be used by the Israeli Occupation Forces, although certain types of jet fuel are exempt.
Prime Minister Sánchez’s measures reflect mounting pressure on 'Israel' over its actions in Gaza and mark a significant escalation in Spain’s foreign policy response, signaling a shift in European defense and trade relations with 'Israel'.
