In a bid to foster a nationwide conversation about the significance of ending the death penalty in Jordan, the National Forum on the Death Penalty and Fundamental Human Rights delved into the challenges and opportunities that confront the nation on this issue.

Participants in the forum underscored that Jordan has committed to various international treaties, which include the obligation to restrict the use of the death penalty.

Currently, there are 30 crimes within the jurisdiction of capital punishment. However, it is noteworthy that Jordan suspended the application of the death penalty in 2004, reinstated it in 2017, yet has not executed any sentences since that year.

The participants emphasized that their call for the abolition of the death penalty is driven by concerns over the inadequate safeguards for a fair trial, particularly in relation to the right of individuals to prompt legal counsel upon being accused.

To date, a total of 222 individuals, including 19 women, have been handed death sentences.

This forum serves as a platform for constructive dialogue on the subject, shedding light on the complexities surrounding the death penalty and its alignment with human rights principles in Jordan.
