Billionaire Elon Musk launched a new artificial intelligence company called xAI on Wednesday. The mission of the company will be to “understand the universe.”

The AI company will compete with offerings like ChatGPT. xAI employs engineers who worked for other tech companies on AI products, including at Google and OpenAI.

In a 90-minute Twitter Spaces voice call last week, Musk discussed his vision, veering into topics like evolution and the fragility of civilization.

Musk previously criticized recent developments in AI, saying in an interview with Tucker Carlson that AI “has the potential of civilization destruction.”

“If I could press pause on advanced AI digital super-intelligence, I would,” Musk said. “But it doesn’t seem like that is realistic.”

Musk hoped xAI would build “good” artificial intelligence, as an alternative to products from big tech companies. The AI product would be safer, because it will be “maximally curious” and “maximally truth-seeking.”

According to the company’s website, xAI aims to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

The company will train its AI models on public tweets and may also be incorporated into Tesla’s software. This relationship would have “mutual benefit,” accelerating the AI model and Tesla’s self-driving capabilities.

In April, Musk announced plans for an AI chatbot called “TruthGPT,” after he criticized ChatGPT for being “politically correct.”

Musk co-founded OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, but left the company in 2018.

Musk said he pushed for meetings with White House officials and has made clear to top government officials in China the importance of regulating AI.

“It’s something that’s sort of hard for us to even comprehend,” Musk said of the dangers posed by novel artificial intelligence models.
