The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) began its early preparations for the rainy season, as the departments of the Municipality cleaned the rainwater drainage of the bridges, tunnels and road networks, according to Deputy Director of the districts and environmental affairs, Basem Tarawneh.

GAM said in a statement on Sunday, July 14, 2019, that its cadres are working on cleaning the main water drainage tunnels in the area of Saqf Al Seil from the bottom of Quraish Street / Downtown, Amman straight to the tunnel’s exit in Al Mahatta area, removing the debris and dust from the streams of valleys, and working on the construction of walls and boulders.

It added that work is currently being done on covering the rainwater drainage holes that are being cleaned with empty plastic bags to prevent the entry of waste and soil that are drifting towards it due to natural factors.

Suction pumps and water collection rooms are also being inspected in the tunnels at night in order to close the tunnels, as there are four pumps in each tunnel that are operated in the event of rain to drain the water.

GAM confirmed that the follow-up work in cleaning the rainwater drainage holes and tunnels continues throughout the year based on a program designed for this purpose.
