The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) announced on Monday, May 6, 2019, that in cooperation with the Artillery at the Jordan Armed Forces and with the Department of Antiquities, the Ramadan cannon will be fired today from the Amman Citadel in conjunction with the Maghrib (sunset) Adhan to mark the time of iftar (the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset.

Cannon firing during Ramadan is a historic and long-standing tradition. It takes place every day before Maghrib prayer, which announces the end of the fasting period and the beginning of iftar.

GAM aims at reviving the ancient Ammani heritage indicated in the firing of Ramadan Cannon, which can be heard throughout the city and the surrounding areas.
