The University of Petra released a statement on Tuesday evening, December 4, to address the “barbaric” shooting incident that took place at the university campus earlier today.

The statement said that a group of students were randomly attacked by a group of unknown suspects, who stormed through the university’s gates undetected.

Campus police interfered to protect the students, but were unable to catch the culprits, who fired shots at the students before quickly fleeing the scene.

Police officers are currently searching for the men at large, whose gunfire lightly wounded two students.

The university said that legal action will be taken against the attackers, as well as strict disciplinary measures against the students if they're found to have been involved in the incident.

According to the university’s public relations department, the entire campus is under close supervision by CCTV cameras, which will hopefully help identify the suspects.

Meanwhile, the university's Dean has declared Wednesday, December 5, as an official day off for all students.
