Veteran Egyptian actor Farouk al-Fishawi shocked his fans and the entertainment industry after announcing that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Fishawi shared the upsetting news while being honored at the 34th Alexandria International Film Festival on Friday.

“I hesitated a lot before deciding to say what I’m about to say, because I did not want to see any upset faces today, especially that I’m personally not upset by what I’m about to tell you.

“After undergoing several tests and x-rays, my doctor told me that I’ve been diagnosed with cancer. I’m going to pretend that this is just a headache, and by having strong will and through persistence, I will overcome this disease and I will attend next year’s Alexandria Film Festival,” the 66-year-old said.

During his speech, Fishawi said that he has found out that he is suffering from another illness, but one that’s “important and beautiful.”

“I’ve been diagnosed with love: love for my colleagues, counterparts and my fans. I still have so much more to give. My fans have stood by me through tough times and have helped me stand here today.”

The prestigious event kicked off on October 3 and will conclude on Monday, October 8.
