A traffic policeman was run over by a speeding driver in Amman on Wednesday, who did not stop to check if the officer was alive or in need of going to the hospital, a security source has said.

The incident took place in Jabal Amman while the traffic officer was on duty.

A video emerged on the internet of the policeman lying on the ground, and of other traffic policemen and civilians hovering over him as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, doctors confirmed that the officer had broken his foot.

An investigation was immediately launched into the incident, and the police was able to catch the runaway driver.

In related news, the State Security Court (SSC) sentenced four offenders to three years in jail on Wednesday, as punishment for assaulting police officers while being chased by them.

The offenders had assaulted the policemen using physical violence and weapons.

At the time, the four co-conspirators were riding in a mini bus when the officers asked them to pull over. The suspects did not comply for fear of being caught, because they were wanted by the authorities for committing several crimes.

The bus driver pressed harder down on the gas pedal and was chased by the police. The two exchanged fire during the chase.

Eventually, the speeding bus lost control and hit a car that was parked on the side of the road; they were all injured and immediately detained by the police.
