Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a televised statement on Monday that Moscow will deliver advanced S-300 missile air defence systems to Syria within the next two weeks.

According to Shoigu, Moscow will transfer the defense systems to Syria’s regime troops promptly, noting that the modernized version of the Soviet-era system "is capable of intercepting aerial attacks at the distance of over 250 kilometers and simultaneously countering several targets."

Russia is also sending sophisticated electronic jam radars to close Syrian airspace to Israeli warplanes if necessary.

Frants Klintsevich, member of Russian parliament's upper house defense committee, told Sputnik on Sunday:

"The essence and meaning of our response is to completely eliminate the possibility of such incidents in the future. We, for example, have all the necessary resources to completely close the Syrian airspace for Israel, and this is only one of the options."

This comes after evidence released by the Russian Defense Ministry on the circumstances of the downing of the Russian Il-20 spy plane “left no doubt that the Israeli Air Force was to blame for the tragedy,” according to Klintsevich.

According to official sources, the Russian spy plane was “accidentally” brought down by Syrian defences during an unannounced Israeli air strike on the coastal city of Latakia, causing the death of 15 Russian military personnel.

Israel denies any connection with the incident, which could escalate friction between the two countries.

"How will this tragedy affect Russia's relations with Israel? It is clear that it is up to the leadership [of Russia] how to address this issue, and I can only make assumptions. I think that the decision will be made taking into account the long-standing good relations between Russia and Israel, and therefore a sharp u-turn like the abolition of a visa-free regime, not to mention something more serious, is hardly possible here," Klintsevich said.

However, the Russian lawmaker believes that Israel’s response will depend on their reaction to the conclusions of the Russian Defense Ministry.

"In connection with this, I consider the statement of Israeli Defense Minister [Avigdor Lieberman], who said today that the attacks on Syria would continue, to be counterproductive. This rhetoric can only aggravate the situation, I do not think that this development of events meets the interests of Israel.”
