A high-speed police chase ended with a man being arrested on an airport runway.

French police detained a driver who smashed his car through a terminal building and onto the tarmac of Lyon Airport.

The fugitive was being chased by more than a dozen police cars and a helicopter on the wrong side of the motorway, before he broke through the security barriers at the Lyon-Saint-Exupery international airport.

"Pursued by police, he smashed through Terminal 1 before reaching the runway area," the government prefect's office said in a statement.

Halfway into the chase, the intruder abandoned his car and tried to flee on foot, but was caught by the dozens of police officers surrounding him.

Flights were temporarily halted until the pursuit was over.

No one was harmed during the incident, while the fugitive’s motives are yet unknown, according to a police source.
