Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, received Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee, Saeb Erekat, on Sunday, August 26, 2018.

In the meeting, Safadi and Erekat discussed ways of carrying on their efforts towards resolving the political tension that currently stands in the way of reaching a two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The two officials voiced their concern about the consequences that will arise if the current peace-deadlock scenario resumes. Stressing the importance of launching an effective and immediate international movement that addresses the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, ends the occupation and solves the crisis in Gaza Strip; things that will –accordingly- spare the region from further conflictions.

Erekat praised the continuous efforts made by Jordan and by His Majesty King Abdullah II in defending the Palestinian cause and supporting the establishment of its independent state. He also expressed his gratitude towards the Kingdom’s ongoing talks and negotiations –with various world leaders, senior officials and governmental representatives– to try find a solution to the current financial deficit that UNRWA suffers from.

Both Safadi and Erekat warned of the seriousness of UNRWA’s financial crisis and mutually agreed on the importance of the Agency’s work in aiding Palestinian refugees. They further addressed the need of maximizing international efforts in order to help find a permanent solution.

During the past week, Safadi has discussed UNRWA with senior US officials at the US Department of State in Washington on Wednesday, August 22, 2018. On the day after, he met with his Swedish counterpart, Margot Wallström, during his visit to Stockholm, Sweden.

The Jordanian FM has also discussed UNRWA’s funding with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, over the phone on Thursday, August 23, 2018.
