Watermelons are a huge part of every Mediterranean diet, bought in large quantities during the summer and enjoyed with different types of white cheese. Yum!
But it is the art of picking the “right” watermelon that has always been a subject of debate amongst the fruit’s lovers: how does one tell a sweet and ripe watermelon from a green, unsweet one? Each has their own method... especially in Jordan.
Some people think that hearing a certain sound when tapping the watermelon indicates its readiness for consumption, while others have theories about picking the watermelon with the “right shade of green” or the “right weight.” The last one has some truth to it.
The next time you’re at the supermarket or about to select the perfect watermelon from one of those tents on the side of the road, why don’t you follow these tips* to guarantee that your watermelon will be as red, sweet and delicious as you hoped it would be.
1. Pick it up: Big or small, the watermelon should feel heavy for its size.
2. Look for the yellow spot: Watermelons develop a splotch where they rest on the ground. When this splotch is creamy yellow, it's ripe.
3. Give it a thump: Tap the underbelly of the watermelon. A ripe one will have a deep hollow sound. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons will sound dull.
