German Chancellor Angela Merkel will carry out an official visit to Jordan on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, Petra news agency reported on Friday.

The Chancellor will be accompanied by a delegation of German parliamentarians and prominent business persons during her first visit to the kingdom.

Merkel is scheduled to hold talks with King Abdullah II to discuss bilateral relations, regional issues, and areas of cooperation.

The last time the two leaders met was on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, which was held in Davos earlier in January, where they agreed on the need to develop mutual relations in various economic and military domains.

During their exchange the King voiced appreciation for Germany's support to Jordan, underlining the importance of enhancing this support in various development and economic projects.

After relations between Germany and Turkey deteriorated in May 2017, Merkel warned that Berlin may pull its troops from its military base in Incirlik and look for other alternatives. "That means looking at alternatives to İncirlik, and one alternative among others is Jordan," The New Arab reported at the time.

Germany has hosted the largest percentage of Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Europe. The country granted protection status to 124,800 of the 175,800 Syrian citizens accepted to the EU in 2017, which is around 70 percent.
