Zarqa became the second city to employ female traffic police officers, according to a statement released by the Central Traffic Department (CTD) on Monday.

The women have worked alongside their male colleagues since last week, the statement added, praising the response and cooperation offered by Zarqa's residents. The experience has been evaluated as successful and is likely be adopted as a measure to increase the capacity of the CTD.

Drivers in the capital are used to cross paths with female traffic police officers yet the urbanized city of Zarqa, located only 30 kilometers north-east of Amman, has followed suit over 15 years later.

In 2002, the CTD selected 7 girls to be the first female traffic sergeants, and the number has risen to over 200, which has opened the gateway for other young girls to join the CTD.

During Ramadan officers on duty around Iftar, the time of breaking fast, urge drivers to drive safely and distribute water and dates to the ones who were caught on the road.
