Jordan has warned the international community from limiting their focus in the Syrian crisis to refugees only instead of solving the crisis and saving Syrians from the disaster of destroying their country, Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Ayman Safadi said.

Safadi’s remarks came during the opening session of the "Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region" conference organized by the European Union and the United Nations and attended by representatives of more than 80 countries and international organizations.

The conference aims to find an effective political solution to the Syrian crisis and to provide adequate support for Syrian refugees and host countries.

During Jordan’s opening speech, Safadi confirmed that the international community must prioritize a political solution for Syrian’s unity and independence that is agreed upon by the Syrian people.

“Everyone's recognition that there will be no military solution to the crisis must be accompanied by collective action to reach a political solution and support the Geneva process to stop the fighting, which will only lead to more killing and destruction,” Safadi said.

On the challenges faced by Jordan, Safadi said that the kingdom exceeded its “absorptive capacity” as more than 1.3 million refugees were welcomed in Jordan since the Syrian crisis started in 2011.

As Jordan is in need for continuous help by the international community, Safadi warned that any regression in the international support for Jordan might affect the services provided for refugees negatively.

He also stressed on Jordan’s commitment to play its humanitarian role towards refugees and expressed Jordan’s appreciation of the EU support.
