Jordanian MPs signed a memorandum requesting a general discussion session addressing Jordan’s control over the territories of Al Baqura and Al Ghamr.

Annex I (b) and (c) of the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty address the two territories and assert Jordan’s sovereignty over them but applies a special regime under which a temporary private ownership is granted to Israelis.

In the memo, 16 MPs endorsed MP Khalil Attia’s call for Jordan to assert its sovereignty and reclaim full control over the areas. The memo also urged the government to respond to public pressure and give notice within the specified period which expires on Oct. 20, 2019.

According to the annex, unless either party provides a prior notice one year before the end of the initial 25 year lease and consultations between the two countries commence, the annex is renewed automatically for a period of another 25 years.

Earlier last month, the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi said that the kingdom was considering whether to reclaim control over Al Baqura and Al Ghamr. He asserted the government will finalize its decision by the end of 2018 in favour of “the benefit of Jordan”.
