Jordanian State Minister for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani condemned on Friday the Israeli escalation on the Gaza Strip during the Palestinian Land Day demonstrations, which left at least 15 killed and more than one thousand injured.

Momani asserted the government’s position that the Israeli occupation is responsible for the casualties in the Gaza Strip as they have violated Palestinians’ right to peacefully demonstrate. He condemned the use of excessive power against the unarmed civilians who were merely asserting their right of return to the homeland from which they were expelled more than 70 years ago.

Momani asked the international community to respond swiftly, exert pressure on the Israeli occupation and force them to adhere to international law. He also urged for the humanitarian crisis, to which more than two million Palestinians in Gaza are subjected, to be resolved.

More than 50 percent of of Palestinians in Gaza are unemployed and a majority relies on humanitarian support of the United Nations Work and Relief Agency (UNRWA).

Tens of thousands gathered near the Gaza borders on Friday during mass sit-ins as part of the “Great Return March” in commemoration of Land Day. The march was scheduled as a peaceful demonstration by Palestinian factions, especially Hamas, in boycott of Trump’s embassy relocation to Jerusalem.
