Nine people were killed and 8 injured on Saturday in a car and a microbus accident at the Cairo-Ismailia road.

Security forces said the car had caught fire after the crash while the passengers were still inside, the Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

DNA tests will be run in order to identify some of the victims who were burnt beyond recognition in the accident.

Such accidents are not uncommon in Egypt as roads are poorly maintained and implementation of traffic laws is weak.

Every year 12 000 people are killed in Egypt due to traffic crashes. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that 42 out of 100,000 deaths are caused by car accidents.
