A lawyer was charged on Monday by the State Security Court (SSC) prosecutor, Fawaz Otoom with lèse-majesté, the crime of insulting the monarchy.

The unnamed lawyer undermined the regime in Jordan by making inciting anti-regime statements while he was giving a speech in Theban area in Madaba.

The court prosecutor has detained the accused for 15 days renewable on Monday.

Meanwhile, Jordan Bar Association has sent a lawyer to follow the investigation of their colleague.

Freedom of speech is guaranteed under article 15 of Jordan’s constitution. However, Jordanian Penal Code in article 149 proscribes undermining “the political regime in the kingdom or inciting opposition to it”.
