Egyptian authorities will allow Palestinians at Cairo International Airport to return to Gaza as soon as possible after they spent days stranded at the airport, according to the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo.

The stranded passengers had appealed to the Egyptian authorities and the embassy to quicken their return back to Gaza or find an immediate solution.

The embassy released the statement on Monday saying their staff will immediately start arrangements to secure the return of Palestinians to the Strip.

Gaza’s palestinians found themselves in limbo when the Rafah border was prematurely closed. Egyptian authorities had announced the border would be opened for three days on February 8, 2018, after about 50 days of closure. However, it was suspended a day earlier than scheduled due to Egyptian military campaign in Sinai. Hundreds of passengers were stuck on both sides of the crossing and inside Cairo International Airport.

More than 400 Palestinians were held in closed halls at Cairo Airport after the closure of the crossing. They wrote a statement to the Euro-Mediterranean (Euro-Med) Human Rights Monitor complaining that Cairo Airport security were holding about 100 people, mostly patients, students and children, in one room, without providing food, drink or sleeping blankets.
