Come Friday, the Jordanian people were still infuriated by the government’s recent decision to impose higher taxes on several commodities, including fuels, foodstuffs and cigarettes.

Following Friday prayers, dozens of angry Jordanians took to the streets in various parts of the Kingdom.

In Amman, a protest kicked off from Al Husseini Mosque in downtown, where many carried placards with the slogans “Putting up prices is playing with fire,” “Citizens’ pockets aren’t the answer” and “Take your hands off poor people’s pockets.”

Meanwhile, activists in Madaba, Karak and Ma’an held similar protests, where they demanded that the government reconsiders its decision to increase prices, and urged them to find a way to improve Jordanians’ living conditions.

This week, Jordanian PM Hani Mulki reassured Jordanians that the current economic crisis can expect a breakthrough by the middle of next year.

Despite acknowledging that the economic hardship citizens are facing is a burden to be shared by “everyone,” he called on citizens to hold the government responsible if measures imposed by it end up failing.
