After rejecting amendments to the law of the teachers’ union in Jordan, teachers gathered this past Saturday, February 10th, 2018, to create their own set of amendments that they felt were vital to realizing better working conditions for teachers in Jordan. These five organically made amendments can be summarized as follows:

1. The teachers’ rejection of the idea of abolishing a teachers’ union: If abolished, the union would not be allowed to participate legally in the organization and improvement of the conditions of the profession. The teachers also request that they have a participatory role with the Ministry of Education to develop and grant licences to practice the profession.

2. Confirming the teachers’ will for themselves and their administrators to remain members of the Jordanian Teachers’ Union and the refusal of all legal articles that prevent their membership and therefore their moral gains including the monetary allowance given to their children.

3. The teachers’ support of the consideration of retired teachers as full members of the union.

4. Voicing a need for an electoral system for the union based on fair geographical and numerical representation in order to best represent its body of employees of various departments and governorates.

5. Affirmation of the rights of young teachers’ voices to be heard by their inclusion to the membership of the Central Authority of the Teachers’ Union after five years of service (when previously the minimum needed for acceptance was ten).

Follow up of the acceptance of these amendments is still pending.
