The Drivers and Motor Vehicles Licensing Department (DVLD) announced on Monday that they will organise a five-day auction to sell special number plates starting February 26th in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance.

The auction will be held at 11am local time, in Building number 1, Hall number 1 at the DVLD offices in northern Marka. The registration for the auction starts today and will close at 10:30 am on the day of the auction. A sixteen percent sales tax will be added to the winning bids.

Each type of number plates will be auctioned on a separate day with the following starting prices:

  • 30,000 JD for single-digit plates (February 26, 2018)
  • 20,000 JD for double-digit plates (February 28, 2018)
  • 10,000 JD for triple-digit plates (March 3, 2018)
  • 600 JD for four and five-digit plates (March 7th, 2018)

In the first number plates auction organized by the DVLD in January, a Jordanian man bought a number plate for the mind-boggling tax inclusive price of JD 522,000. Due to the success of the previous auction, the department intends to hold several similar auctions in the future.

The auction aims to introduce an "honest way” to sell number plates, the Colonel Mamoun Al Azzam, the department’s acting director told the Jordan Times. The DVLD’s main aim behind such auctions is to curb the trend of number plates being sold on the black market, he said.
