Turkish army said on Friday that its warplanes hit Kurdish militia in the Syrian city of Afrin, after the air strikes stopped temporarily after shooting down of Russian warplane in a different area in Syria last weekend.

The Turkish airstrikes demolished 19 targets including shelters and gun positions, according to the armed forces. The airstrikes started at midnight, the Turkish news agency of Anadolu reported.

Turkey had suspended its raids as Russia worked on its air defence system after Syrian rebels shot down a Russian warplane in Idlib earlier on Feb.3, the Hurriyet Turkish newspaper reported.

Turkey started a military offensive, called Olive Branch, in Afrin earlier in January 20 against Kurdish forces, which Turkey sees as a terrorist group.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin spoke on Thursday by telephone and agreed to enhance military and security coordination in Syria.

Turkey is not satisfied with U.S. support for the Kurdish-led forces, which views growing Kurdish power as a security threat along its borders.
