Black is elegant, classy and timeless, but it’s also the traditional colour worn at funerals, which is why this Egyptian woman reportedly received online backlash after wearing a black dress at her engagement party.

Aya Shabaan, 22, posted pictures of her puffy black gown on social media, but was reportedly met with sarcastic comments from those who saw it.

The young bride-to-be’s choice of attire wasn’t all that “dark.” She chose to wear a tiara made completely out of bright flowers, and held a bridal bouquet with white, red, pink and purple flowers in it.

Despite objections from her relatives, Aya told local media that she chose a black dress for the happy occasion because she absolutely adores that colour, adding that she considers it “part of her personal freedom to do what she believes is good for her,” reported Egypt Independent.
